Richard was the younger of two sons born to the late Adolph and Selma (Eimermann) Steinhardt. He first married Jeanne Deau on 6 March 1943, in Plymouth. She preceded him in death on 24 September 1979.

On 12 September 1980, he second married Sylvia Behrens and she also preceded him in death on 24 April 2009.

"Richard was a member of Saint Peter the Fisherman Church. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1938 and entered the Armed Forces (U.S. Coast Guard) during World War II; a Yeoman, first class, serving from 9 September 1941 thru 19 February 1946.

"He was employed as a Teamster driver for thirty-one years before retiring in 1980. He volunteered his time as a driver with the Senior Center. He also belonged to the YMCA health facility & loved to walk. He put on many miles walking the sidewalks of Two Rivers. Richard was also a member of the Happy Hoppers Dance Club. Richard loved his family deeply."

"Richard was preceded in death by his grandson, Aaron Rezachek in 2005, a step-son, William Behrens, and one brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Alice Steinhardt.
