DANIEL W. HAMMOND was born on January 2, 1839 in Salem, Massachusetts, son of Adeline and Philip Hammond. As a young boy the family moved to Beverly, MA. Daniel, age 22, enlisted with the Eighth Regiment Infantry on April 15, 1861 and mustered out on August 1, 1861. He enlisted with the Twenty-third Infantry and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant on October 8, 1861, 1st lieutenant on November 8, 1862. He was commissioned captain on June 1, 1863 and was promoted to major for Gallant and Meritorious service on October 14, 1864. He mustered out June 25, 1865. He married Mary A. Young in 1868 and they took up residence in Haverhill. He was City Marshall in Haverhill in 1887 and 1888 and was appointed to the inspection department of the state District Police (State Police) where he served in both the detective and inspection department until 1904. Daniel died on May 30, 1926 and is buried in Hilldale Cemetery in Haverhill, MA.
