U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Amherst College, in 1874, from the law department of Harvard University, in 1877, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was assistant attorney general of Massachusetts, (1879-82) and a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1890-91). In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next fifteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1925. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1925-31). After his term, he engaged in literary pursuits and later died in retirement at age 83.
