Bernita Flora Gilberstadt 95, widow of Samuel Harry, passed away Friday, September 20. She was born in Chicago in 1918.

Bernita graduated from The School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine and was the first blind women to graduate from Palm Beach Junior College. She went on to become a Certified Proofreader for The Library of Congress and one of the founders of The Temple Sisterhood Braille Group in the mid 50's to help mainstream blind children into public schools. The group also transcribes restaurant menus and books. She has received many awards from tv stations, Eve Award from The Times Union, National Enquirer, etc. and did not retire until she was 90.

Benita was preceded in death by sons, Francis Bernard (Frankie) and George Norman. She is survived by daughters, Penelope Smith of Brunswick, Ga. and Diane Claire Kenison of Fleming Island, FL; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Ahavath Chesed, 8727 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 33217. Immediately following will be a graveside ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery, 4535 Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206. Services entrusted to Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park.
