US Congressman, US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He was elected to represent Kentucky's 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1887 to 1890. From 1883 to 1889 he served a Speaker of the House. In 1890 he resigned his House Seat, having been elected as a Senator from Kentucky to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator James Beck. He served in the Senate from 1890 to his resignation in 1893, when he accepted the appointment of Secretary of the Treasury in the President Grover Cleveland's administration. He served in the Cabinet from 1893 to 1897.
