She remained on the farm in Howard County until graduating from Elma High School in 1916. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for three years and taught school in Mitchell County for three years before moving to Des Moines, where she worked for an insurance office and for a short time in Ankey at the shell factory. In 1944, she went to work for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1965.
She was married to Clint Heater in 1956 and he preceded her in death in 1983. She had been a member of the Methodist Church.
