Ellen met Richard Paul Engel in New York City in December, 1944; they were married April 14, 1945. Daughter, Carole Lynn, was born in October, 1946 and son, Richard Joseph, was born in January, 1950. The family relocated to Livonia, Michigan in 1953 and son, James Allen was born in August, 1955. Later that year, the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Ellen was involved in her church, Immaculate Heart of Mary. Dick and Ellen purchased a lodge called the Eagles' Nest in Grand Haven in 1960, renting to supervised groups of high school girls. When the Shamrock's semipro football team was formed, Ellen was elected Secretary. She took up golf when the Engels joined Greenridge Country Club.
In 1972, Ellen was diagnosed with bone cancer and fought a courageous battle. She was predeceased by herstepfather in 1959 and her father in 1968. She leaves behind her mother, sister, brother, husband, children and two grandchildren, Gregory and Kristin Zoller.
