Former Alaska resident Hazel Ione Soderberg, 90, died May 27, 2007, at her home in Portland, Ore. A Mass was June 1 at St. Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Hazel was born Oct. 16, 1916, in Dillon, Mont., to Virgil and Myrtle Brown. She was the second of five children. In 1960, Hazel arrived in Sitka via an aircraft nicknamed Super-Connie, and then went on to Annette Island in another aircraft from World War II, the PBY, with her youngest two in tow. She then piled them into a chartered Cessna 170 to join her husband at their new logging camp at Rodman Bay in Southeast Alaska. Twenty-five years of logging camp life was rewarded by a leisurely seaside life in Sitka, where she catered to the whims and needs of all her husband's fishing friends. A true Sitka socialite, she hosted one of the more raucous Super Bowl parties each year. In the mid 1990s, she and Pat relocated to Portland to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Hazel was a dedicated mother to her four children and a lifelong companion to her husband of 70 years, Patrick. The consummate matriarch, Hazel was the glue that kept her family together and focused during their lifelong odyssey through the timber industry in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

She is survived by her husband, Patrick; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Gayle of Sun Valley, Idaho, and Virgil and Kathy of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Patricia Petersen of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Christie and her fiance, David Cozzens, of Portland; and brother, Col. Virgil G. Brown of Tigard, Ore.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Finsley; and her sisters, Ruth Finsley Dames and Jane Finsley Connelly. The family requests from those that knew and loved this great lady that a fir tree be planted in her honor. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
