As a youth, Gustav appears to have been adopted by Frank and Engle Minning (1870 US census) and by age 15 worked in a cotton factory (1880 US census). His marriage with Katherine Gilsdorf produced 5 children Theodore, Walter, Elsie, Gus and Adrian. On November 23, 1905 Gus married Arabelle Jane Gray (nee Allison) as his 3rd wife. Gus was a mechanical foreman in Fort Worth, Texas with the Gulf, Colorado and Sante Fe Railway and later a station master. Pictures of Gus in his later years feature a straw hat.
