Jack T. Crawford, 77 died October 30, 2004, at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, surrounded by his family, from complications of ALS--Lou Gehrig's disease.

Jack was born September 13, 1927, in South Bend, the son of Edmund H. and Lola G. (Smith) Crawford. Upon graduation from Washington State University in 1950, Jack became an extension agent for Kittitas County. In January 1955, Jack married local resident, Sylvia Harrel.

In 1957, he earned a master's degree in extension education at Colorado State University. He continued his career in the extension service in Kittitas County, then Pierce and Snohomish counties, and in 1967 settled in Mount Vernon with the job of Skagit County extension chairman with duties as dairy agent in Skagit and Island counties. Jack retired from extension in 1984.

Sylvia died in July 1987, after a long battle with cancer. After her death, Jack was encouraged by friends to take square dancing lessons, where he met Joan Vague. Jack and Joan were married in 1988.

Jack is survived by his wife, Joan, sons Jay (Susie) Crawford, Conway and Kevin Crawford of Woodland, California; daughters Kim (Mark) Gebhardt of Placentia, California, and Jill Cigich of Orange, California. Also, stepson David (Carri) Vague of Marysville; and stepdaughters Karen (Mark) Perkins of Anacortes, Susan (Doug) Nemo of Camano Island, Sharon (Jack) Sanford of Camano Island, and Colleen (Bob) Hamblen of Wasilia, Arkansas. Also one brother Edmund (Ramona) Crawford of Raymond and 19 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sylvia Harrel Crawford; and sister, Bernice Myren.

Memorials may be made to the ALS Association, Evergreen Chapter, 6627 S. 191st Place F-106, Kent, WA 98032. Public memorial services will be held November 4, 2004 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Mount Vernon. A private family interment will be held at Mount Vernon Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.
