Eulogy written by Ed Anderson, Mary's son

Mom's father Wilson was a doughboy of WWI. He passed away due to complications from injuries received on the battlefield when Mom was less than a year old. It was the Great Depression and times were hard so Mom's brothers were sent off to live with a family in Illinois while she was sent to live with her mother's uncle. When her mother remarried, Mom came home, but her brothers did not.
At the age of 16, Mom married Edward Lester Anderson in January 1948. Ed Anderson and Kay Anderson were born while our family was living in St. Louis Missouri. Mom and Dad divorced 3 years later but remained lifelong friends.
Mom's mother Ruby passed away in 1952. Two years later in 1954, Mom moved us to San Francisco California, but only lived there for only a few months. We settled eventually in Arlington nearby Riverside CA. It was there where Mom met Pearl Hill for the first time, who took her in along with, Ed, and Kay, after we arrived there by Greyhound bus and penniless. Pearl is not related to Mom but became like a sister to her. Today the kids still call her aunt Pearl.
Mom found work at Hunter Douglas Corp where she met and soon married Lloyd Powell in September 1955. Lloyd had two children from a previous marriage, Cliff Powell and Lloyce Powell. Our family was completed when Steve Powell was born 1956 and all of us kids grew up as true brothers and sisters settling in to normal family life. In 1957 they purchased a 3 bed room one bath 900 sq. ft home that went through several remodels to become a 4 bedroom 2 bath 2,200 sq. ft. home by the end of 1969. Mom also worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" for McDonald Douglas Aircraft in Saint Louis Missouri, at Bourns Inc. in Riverside and then for at Areojet General manufacturing parts for the Lunar Lander.
Since Mom hadn't completed high school, she attended night school and in 1969 graduated at the same high school that all 5 of her kids graduated. It was essential to her that the kids finish high school, she often said to them: "You are going to graduate high school if I have to beat you every step of the way!" She commented later in life that there were a few times she thought she might have to follow through with that threat!
Besides going back to school, working fulltime and raising the family, Mom made her mind up to conquer her fear of water. So she took swimming lessons to overcome those fears and three years later she became a certified life guard at age 37.
After 17 years of marriage, Mom once again was divorced and she moved to Orange County, and then moved to Yuba City and the Sacramento area to be closer to her family. Another career change; Mom went to trade school at age 38 while still working full time and became a cosmetologist at the age of 41. The last 40 years she cut hair for a living and for the last 15 years she worked for Super Cuts retiring at the of age 81 in December 2012, with bad knees, a bad arm and with the love of a lot of close coworkers and customers.
Mom lived with Steve and his daughter Sarah, who grew up with her Grams. Mom was also known as Mema, Grammy, Grandma or Grandma Mary.
In 2009 Mom had her gallbladder removed; the biopsy found that it was cancerous and as a result had another surgery to remove a small piece of her liver which tested cancer free. After this surgery we determined get Mom a house, Steve partnered with her. Kay her husband Bob and Rose and I participated with support. Each one had a different part to play and Mom finally had a home. It took a different sacrifice for each of us and we are so grateful we had that opportunity to provide from Mom these last few years. She moved in to her new home in 2010 located in Plumas Lake. Her last two wishes were to make it to her 82 birthday and go home from the Hospital. The family celebrated her birthday at the hospital and when she was brought home she had a wide smile and was praising Jesus. Mom went to be with Jesus on September 6, 2013 at 9:14 AM. Mom is survived by her brother Don, her five children, 11 grandchildren and 19 great grand children.
On the evening before she passed, Pastor Bob asked her, "Do you know what you are going to do when you get to heaven?" Mom said, "I'm going to see my mom" Pastor Bob then asked her what she was going to say to her mom and She replied "Halleluiah"!
