William Levi Alden was the second of nine children born to Royal & Melinda Alden. William was born in Newbury County, South Carolina. He moved with his family as a child to Hamilton County, Illinois and remained there the rest of his life. He married Mary Hannah Martin on August 21, 1855. The 1860 census record shows his occupation as that of a merchant and the 1880 census record shows his occupation as a "huckster" which in the 1800s meant "a seller of small wares". Together William and Mary had 13 children and made their home in Ashley, Washington County, Illinois for more than 40 years. William Levi Alden was a direct descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims John Alden & Priscilla Mullins. He died at the age of 71 at his home in Ashley.
