Walter Fred Cox Sr. was the son of Elijah Andrew and Lydia Alice Cox and was born near Ashland. The family moved to Water Valley, MS in the 1920's. He married Essie Merle Dickerson, born 16 Oct 1920, daughter of Roy Simmons and Essie Bland South Dickerson of Oxford 1 Nov. 1941, only a month before Pearl Harbor. Dad knew he would have to enlist but put it off until after I was born in July of 1942. He enlisted in the Navy and obtained the rank of 2nd class Radarman by the end of the war. He took part in 9 major envasions. Fred and Merle were the parents of three sons; Walter Fred Jr., Ronald Lynn, and Stephen Alan. Mother lives in Wynne, AR. Fred worked for B.F. Goodrich as tire salesman an accountant from the early 1950's and had never missed a day of work until a week before his death of a heart attack. His job took him from Oxford, MS, to Water Valley, MS, Tupelo, MS, Lexington, TN, Paris, TN and finally to Russellvile, AR. He was a member of the Baptist church and sang in the choir.
