Esther Swain, formerly of Corvallis, died Friday in Napa, Calif. She was 91.
Esther was born in Ochiltree County, Texas, to James Henry Whippo and Mary Campbell Whippo. Her family moved to Oregon, and Esther spent most of her life in Corvallis. Here she met Harold Swain. They married on Dec. 27, 1936.
Esther enjoyed her life as a housewife, gatherings with her family, gardening, reading, bowling, bingo and keeping up with local sports teams.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mina and Fred Swingle, of Napa, Calif.; grandchildren Jeffrey Swingle of Munich, Germany and Wendy Swingle of Portland; sisters Mary Ellen Lengele of Salem and Kathryn Wade of Corvallis; brother Don Whippo of Corvallis; and many nieces and nephews.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1983; by her brothers James H. Whippo Jr., Glynn Whippo and Laurence (Bill) Whippo; and by sisters Ermina Pewtherer and Louise Carson.
A family graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at Oak Lawn Memorial Park.
