John David Askew, age 59, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2002 surrounded by his family.

John was born on March 2, 1943 in Washington, D.C., the son of John A. and Idelle W. Askew. He graduated from Jordan High School, and married his high school sweetheart, Lael Kunz. They were later sealed in the Manti Temple. He then went on to graduate from the University of Utah and received an MBA from New York University.

John accomplished many things in his short career. He spent several years in New York City working on Wall Street, in Washington D.C. as the Deputy Director of Energy under President Gerald Ford, and in Southern California as an insurance executive. Twenty one-years-ago, the family returned to Utah where he worked as an investment consultant.

John was a teacher, wonderful example to others, and lover of life and family. He loved the mountains and he loved to play. He was an avid skier, mountain biker and anything else that kept him outdoors. Blessed with an extraordinarily beautiful voice, he performed with various choirs and sang solos whenever he had the opportunity. He taught many friends and family members to ski by taking them to the top of the mountain and saying something like, " O.K., this is how you do it. Follow me." He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Even after he became ill, he took great pride and pleasure in working at the LDS Humanitarian Center, and being a temple worker at the Jordan River Temple. Despite the effects of a devastating disease, he endured with dignity and devotion to his family. John's life and struggle against this disease was chronicled by Lois Collins in the eight page Deseret News story "Generation of Tears" on September 12, 1999.

John was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter Julie.

He is survived by his wife, Lael, his brother Robert and Judy, his children Scott and Carol Askew, Amy Bishop, Charles and Traci Askew, Jane and Gary Denning, and Daniel and Kristi Taylor Askew and 14 grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Millcreek Health Center and Draper Rehabilitation and Care Center for their tender and loving care the last five years of his life.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2002, at the new Corner Canyon Third Ward Chapel, located at 498 East Hollow Creek (14075 South), Draper, Utah. Friends and family may visit Sunday, May 12, from 6 - 8 p.m. or Monday May 13, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Corner Canyon Third Ward. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens 106th South 1700 East, Sandy Utah.
