Bernard Joseph Schermetzler, age 79, of 3813 Menasha Ave., Manitowoc, died Thursday evening, May 10, 2007, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

He was born Oct. 31, 1927, in the town of Kossuth, son of the late Jacob and Mary (Nikolai) Schermetzler. Bernard was a veteran in the Army of Occupation, serving in Japan from April 1946 to Sept. 1947. On Nov. 27, 1948, he married the former Marie F. Pritzl at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. He was employed as an auto body technician for many years, retiring from First Chrysler, Manitowoc. Bernard was a member of the Wisconsin Auto Body Association and Manitowoc County Auto Body Association, where he served as secretary; VFW; Army of Occupation; and was a former member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church where he was involved with maintenance and was an usher. He was currently a member of St. Francis of Assisi.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Schermetzler, Manitowoc; two sons and daughters-in-law: Robert John and Ellen Schermetzler, Berlin, Michael Lee and Linda Schermetzler, Whitelaw; two daughters and a son-in-law: Mari-Carole Shooks, Windham Center, Conn.; Kay Lynn and Daniel Marsicek, Whitelaw; 11 grandchildren: Justin Schermetzler and his fiancee Cari Grabowski; Corbett Schermetzler, Morgan Schermetzler, Carrie Schermetzler and her fiancee Bertrand Tirel; Kristin Schermetzler and Jacob Schermetzler; Amy Bartlett and her husband, Josh; Adam Shooks and Dominic Shooks; Nicole Fenlon and her husband, Patrick; and Jordan Marsicek; five great- grandchildren: Trent and Alexis Schermetzler; Adrianna and Lucas Bartlett; and Zachary Fenton; one brother and sister-in-law: Donald and Jeanette Schermetzler, Manitowoc; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Marie Mayer, Manitowoc; and Eileen and Edward Staudinger, Reedsville. He is further survived by two sisters-in-law: Rosalia Schermetzler, Manitowoc and Anna Schermetlzer, Whitelaw; four brothers-in-law: Norbert Pritzl and his wife, Rita, Cato, Paul Pritzl and his wife, Violet, Manitowoc, Ed Pritzl and his wife, Ann, Cato, Don Pritzl and his wife, Joyce, Luxemburg; seven sisters-in-law: Agatha Leist, Valders; Anna Mae Cornils and her husband, Roger, Manitowoc; Geraldine Brouchoud and her husband, David, New Berlin; Eunice Beilke and her husband, LeRoy, Manitowoc; Monica Herzog, Manitowoc; Kathryn Krupski and her husband, Ronald, Manitowoc; Suzanne Zimmermann and her husband, Howard, Manitowoc, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Jane Marie Schermetzler; three brothers: Norbert. Jacob and Leonard Schermetzler; four infant brothers; three sisters: Helen Schultz; Irma Huber; Adeline Leick; and brothers-in-law: Fred Leick, Victor Huber, Norman Mayer, Jack Schultz, Ed Leist and John Pritzl; a sister-in-law, Irene Oswald and her husband, Joseph; brother-in-law, Othmar Pritzl and his wife, Laura; and a brother-in-law, Bob Herzog.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Monsignor Jim Vanden Hogen, with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Graveside military rites will be accorded by VFW, Otto Oas Post 659.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2007, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. led by Deacon Phil Andrastek. The family will also greet relatives and friends Monday morning at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m.
