Carl Wernecke, 82, of Rt. 3, Manitowoc, died Sunday at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. The Rev. A. T. Degner will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Wernecke was born Sept. 18, 1885, in the Town of Newton, son of the late Carl and Caroline Schmitz Wernecke. Mr. Wernecke taught in rural schools at Newton and farmed in the township until 10 years ago when he went into semi-retirement. He was currently president of Eastern Mutual Insurance Co., and had served as either an officer or director of the firm for more than 40 years. He was a member of Newton Mutual Fire Insurance Co. for many years, a director since 1925 and treasurer since 1951. He served as Newton Town board clerk for 35 years, was a life member of St. John Church and a member of the church council. He married Charlotte Rehbein Wernecke Feb. 26, 1921. She died in 1966.
Survivors include three sons, (private); two brothers, Erwin, of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, and Benjamin, of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. John Reich and Mrs. Peter Schroeder, of Milwaukee and Mrs. Arthur Geisler, of Manitowoc; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. A son and three brothers preceded him in death.
Friends may call at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after 3 p.m. Tuesday until Wednesday noon and at the church until time of service.
