Herbert E. Wernecke, 66, died Saturday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical and Lutheran Church, Newtonburg, with the Rev. A. T. Degnar officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Wernecke was born Aug. 25, 1891, in the Town of Newton, son of the late Carl and Caroline Schmitz Wernecke. He married Stella Korthauer Nov. 26, 1918, and the couple lived at Manitowoc several years before moving to the homestead farm. They retired three years ago and took up residence in Manitowoc Rapids. He was a past president of the Manitowoc-Newton Telephone Co., a past
member of the Newton School Board and was an elder of the church at the time of death.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Arthur, of Prairie Du Sac, Wis., and Elton of Rt. 3, Manitowoc; three brothers, Ervin at Manitowoc Rapids, Carl at Newton and Benjamin of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Reich and Mrs. Peter Schroeder of Milwaukee and Mrs. Arthur Geisler of Manitowoc; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday when the casket will be moved to the church where the body will lie in state until the time of service.
