SUDDEN DEATH TAKES NEWTON MAN, A PIONEER
Carl Wernecke Stricken Sunday…

Carl Wernecke 72, a lifelong resident of the county and one of the best known in Newton, died suddenly Sunday, a victim of a stroke of apoplexy. News of his death comes as a surprise and shock to friends. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 o'clock from the home at Newton and at 1:30 from St. Paul's church there.

Mr. Wernecke was born in this county February 22, 1853, and had spent his entire life in the county. He was married in youth to Caroline Schmitz, the two families having been among the earliest settlers of Newton. Mr. Wernecke spent his life in farming and was successful.

He is survived by seven children, Mrs. A. Geisler and Mrs. J. Reich of this city, Mrs. Peter Schroeder and Benjamin Wernecke of Milwaukee, Erwin, Carl and Herbert of Newton. One brother, Henry Wernecke of this city and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Roepke and Mrs. Carl Hoeffner, also of the city. Seventeen grandchildren are also left to mourn the loss of Mr. Wernecke.
