Mrs. Caroline Wernecke, 87, a lifelong resident of Manitowoc county and a resident of Newton for all except five years of her life, died early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Geisler, 1200 Philippen street, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Wernecke had made her home with the Geislers for the last five years.

She was born in the town of Newton, July 29, 1852, and was the first child to be baptized in the Newtonburg church. She was active in affairs of the church for many years and was an honorary member of the ladies aid society of the parish.

Mrs. Wernecke, nee Caroline Schmitz, was a member of a pioneer Manitowoc county family. She was married to Carl Wernecke Dec. 22, 1878. Mr. Wernecke died in 1926.

Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Geisler and Mrs. John Reich of this city and Mrs. Peter Schroeder of Milwaukee; four sons, Irwin of Manitowoc Rapids, Carl and Herbert of Newton and Benjamin of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Wernecke of this city and Mrs. Edward Thomas of Milwaukee; 23 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren.

The body will be removed from the Wattawa, Urbanek # Schlei funeral home to the Geisler residence Thursday afternoon. Funeral services will be held there Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and at St. John's church, Newton, at 2 o'clock with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Edward Kionka will officiate.
