John Spoetgen Dies at Hospital

MANITOWOC —
John F. Spoentgen, retired shoe merchant and Circuit Court bailiff, died early Friday evening at Holy Family Hospital where he had been a patient a day. Spoentgen, 83, had resided at 1015 Hamilton St.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Schmitz will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Spoentgen was born in Manitowoc Oct. 22, 1873, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Spoentgen. He attended the Third Ward School where he was graduated in 1887. After working at the Hansen Wagon Works, he traveled the Great Lakes for three years as a deck hand on the Black boats, flour boats and the Goodrich boats. In 1892 he left the lakes and joined his brother, Henry, as partner in a shoe store. After 46 years the partnership was dissolved by Henry's death. In 1932 he retired from business, but a few years later managed the shoe department at Sears-Roebuck store for two years after its opening. In 1947 he was appointed bailiff of the Circuit Court. He resigned in March of this year.

Spoentgen was one of four responsible for the founding of the Manitowoc Eagles aerie in 1903 and was one of two surviving charter members. On Aug. 16, 1904, he married Mary Koutnik who died in 1940.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Harvey G. Treadwell of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Marie Hess of Platteville; two grandchildren and a great grandchild.
