Gravel Pit Worker Is Killed Under Tractor
Lawrence Van Lannen Dies of Injuries After Accident In Town of Meeme
Lawrence Van Lannen, 30, employed on a county gravel pit crew, died in the Holy Family hospital this morning of injuries suffered Thursday noon when he was caught under the cab of a tractor he was operating in the Schwartz pit, in the town of Meeme. Several blood transfusions were resorted to in a vain effort to save his life. He sustained a crushed chest and severe internal injuries.
Roll Down Embankment
Van Lannen almost succeeded in jumping free from the tumbling tractor as it rolled down a 20-foot bank at the site of the pit, after it went out of control. He was caught between the top of the driver’s cab and the bank. The accident happened when Van Lannen sought to move the tractor, used as an anchor for a drag line in gravel excavating operations in the pit. He got into the cab and started the tractor up a steep incline close to the edge of a high bank. One of the tracks came off the tractor and in seeking to make adjustments, Van Lannen is believed to have thrown the tractor gears into neutral.
The machine suddenly started backward down the incline and toppled over the edge of the bank. The driver jumped to escape being crushed by the heavy machine. He did succeed in clearing the main part of the tractor but was pinned to the bank by the top of the cab.
Ambulance Called
Workers of the gravel pit crew, in charge of Foreman Arthur Klackner, released Van Lannen from his position under the cab. An ambulance was summoned from this city and moved the injured workman to the hospital here. Dr. Gerald Rau, Two Rivers county coroner , who was called to the city today after the death of Mr. Van Lannen, investigated the accident. He announced no inquest will be held. He classed Van Lannen’s death as accidental.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at nine o’clock from the St. Andrew’s Catholic church. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery.
He was born in Stiles, Wis., in 1905. When a boy the family moved to Two Rivers where they resided for eight years and came to this city 20 years ago. In 1926 he married Miss Viola Klein of this city.
Survivors are his widow; two daughters, La Veta, 6, and Dorothy Jean, 8; step-father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Ernst La Verdure, city; five brothers, Louis, Frank, Alvin and Harley, city, and Ervin, Forestville, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. George Wettenkamp and Mary Ann, both of this city.
