JOSEPH WEINFURTHER
(1851 - 1931)

Former County Clerk Passes Away, Aged 80
J. WEINFURTHER SERVED COUNTY IN YEAR 1895
Pioneer Hotel Man of City Suffers Third Stroke and Dies at Home in This City Friday

Death late Friday claimed Joseph Weinfurther, former county clerk of Manitowoc county and one of the pioneer hotel men of the state, when he passed away at his home, 723 South Twenty-second street, as result of a third stroke of paralysis. Two previous strokes, one several years ago, had not been permanent in effect, but for some time Mr. Weinfurther had been inactive and unable to be about much. The end came peacefully.

Mr. Weinfurther, born in Austria January 14, 1851, came to Manitowoc in his youth and had made his home here for more than sixty years, almost continuously. For many years he was engaged in conducting a hotel during early days, having conducted two hotels during his operations in that line. Later Mr. Weinfurther engaged in the furniture business and was a salesman for his son-in-law, a resident of Marshfield, maintaining a yard here.

Following his second attack some years ago, Mr. Weinfurther retired from active pursuits.

Served As County Clerk
In 1895 Mr. Weinfurther was elected county clerk of Manitowoc county, serving for one term and retiring because of his health which was none too good at that time. He was widely known in the county and retained the esteem of a large circle of friends.

Mr. Weinfurther was married November 5, 1878 to Anna Schliesleder who with three daughters, survive to mourn his passing. The daughters are Miss Anna, of Sturgeon Bay; Mrs. John Rank, of Milwaukee. One daughter, Mrs. Louis Petey, of Rhinelander, preceded her father in death. Four grandchildren, and one brother, Charles Weinfurther of Mishicot, also survive.

The body of Mr. Weinfurther is at the Pfeffer Funeral home where it will lie in state until Monday morning when funeral services will be held at 8:30 from the parlors and at 9 from St. Paul’s Catholic church. Rev. Martin Jaekles will officiate and burial will be at Calvary.

Mr. Weinfurther was a member of the Holy Name Society and of St. Joseph’s society of St. Paul’s church.

NARROW ESCAPE IN RUNAWAY
Joseph Weinfurther Was Badly Hurt in Accident Saturday

Frightened by a motor cycle at Eighth and Commercial streets, a horse driven by Joseph Weinfurther ran away and the driver had a narrow escape from being killed, suffering serious injuries, the full extent of which has not yet been ascertained.

The accident happened while Mr. Weinfurther was about to turn the corner at 8th and Commercial, the sudden appearance of the cycle sending the horse in a wild plunge down Commercial street. The animal is owned by L.T. Anderson and half way down the block veered to turn into the alleyway leading to the barn and it was here that Mr. Weinfurther was injured. In his efforts to control the horse, Weinfurther leaned over in his seat and passing a telephone pole, his head collided with the obstruction. The force of the blow broke the nose and the face was bruised and mutilated in terrible manner. Mr. Weinfurther was picked up for dead but examination by Dr. Gleason showed that the injuries are not fatal, unless there should be internal hurts which it is feared is possible. Mr. Weinfurther was thrown against the post with terrific force and that he escaped instant death is a wonder.

He was removed to his home on Western avenue and reports are favorable to recovery.
