Grace Wernecke-Hessel, age 85, a resident of St. Mary’s Home, Manitowoc, died Monday evening, June 17, 2002 at St. Mary’s Home.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002 at St. Mary’s Home Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Memorial Mass will be the Rev. Tom Wojciechowski O.F.M. with burial of the cremated remains at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

She was born Jan. 16, 1917 in Rockwood, daughter of the late Reinhardt and Louise Kolichek Hessel. She attended Holy Family Convent, Vocational School and Manitowoc Business College. On July 5, 1942, she married Otto Wernecke in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death July 11, 1983. She then married Richard Hessel on July 11, 1984. He preceded her in death May 10, 1994. Grace worked in various capacities at Hessel Music House which included sales and teaching organ. She lived in the Manitowoc area most of her life. Grace moved to Arizona in 1978, returning to Manitowoc in 1993 where she resided at the Felician Village. She was a former member of St. Andrew Church Choir.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law: James Wernecke, Tovey, Ill.; Robert and Diane Wernecke, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Thomas Wernecke and Jeanine Wright, Champaign, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law: Susan and Robert Wallen, Windsor, Wis.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth Kinzel and Gladys Wilhelm and a brother: Dan Hessel, all of Manitowoc. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by a sister: Eva Marie Hessel and a brother; Russell Hessel.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Mary’s Home Chapel, Manitowoc, from 8 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at 9 a.m.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Many lives were enriched through Grace’s devotion to family and her passion for music.
