Joseph J. Zagrodnik, 79, of 1129 S. 22nd St., Manitowoc, died Monday morning in Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Joseph Mattern will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Mr. Zagrodnik was born March 11, 1898 in Manitowoc, son of the late John and Constance Krause Zagrodnik. He had been employed as a clerk with Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. He married Alvina Pleester Aug. 6, 1928. Zagrodnik, known as Joe Wilson started his famous baseball career at the age of 15 playing for the William Rahr Team as a pitcher, but because of his feared hitting ability in the mid-twenties he moved to center field where he starred with numerous state professional teams. During his career Zagrodnik associated with such baseball greats as Joe Vnuk, Frank Brindza and Jack Herzog.

Survivors include his wife, Alvina and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call in Pfeffer Funeral Home 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday were a prayer service will be 8 p.m.
