In one of the most highly publicized cases in the Texas Panhandle, the former Amarillo police officer was sentenced to die for the April, 1975 abduction and murder of 16-year-old Katina_Moyer, the daughter of former Texas State Rep. Hudson Moyer. He had been on death row since December 01, 1976. Only three currently-condemned men have been on Texas' death row longer than Vanderbilt. He died of pneumonia after being transported to a Galveston hospital.
