William L. Nelson, 86, of Columbia died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at South Hampton Place.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Parker Funeral Service with the Rev. Michael Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Nelson was born Sept. 2, 1911, in Columbia to William and Stella Boschert Nelson.

He married Phyllis Harrison on July 6, 1947, and she survives.

He graduated from Hickman High School and received degrees from the University of Missouri College of Arts and Science and the law school. He was editor-in-chief of the Missouri Law Review and served as vice-president of the Student Government Association. He practiced law in Columbia and was later employed by Shelter Insurance Cos., serving as vice-president and general counsel. He retired in 1981. He was elected city attorney and he served as president of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and president of the Board of Education. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Stuart of Albuquerque, N.M., and Nancy Haire of Overland Park, Kan.; and five grandchildren.
