WILLIAM HAEHN

BURIED FRIDAY

The funeral of William Hahn was held from the home on North Tenth Street at 1:30 o’clock Friday afternoon in charge of Rev. W. C. Melendy. The Christian Church choir sang. Burial was in the Bailey Cemetery near Strawn.

Wm. Haehn was born August 23, 1846 and departed this life January 19, 1926, aged 79 years, 4 months and 26 days. He was the oldest son of John D. and Magdelene Haehn. He was married to Mary E. Grubb on April 18, 1878. To this union was born four children: Mrs. Minnie Knee, who preceded her father in death February 15, 1925; Mrs. Ivy Pattison of Cheyenne, Wyo; Mrs. Elnora Wise of Emporia; and one son, Fred Hahn, at the home address. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by two brothers, Jacob, living near Burlington and Adam, near Waverly; three sisters living in Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren; one great grandchild and a host of friends to mourn his loss. At the age of 17 he joined the Baptist Church. He was a Civil War veteran, serving in Company D, 56 Ohio Inf. and his passing has caused a distinct loss to the community.

Those who came from a distance for the funeral of Mr. Haehn were: J. A. Grubb, Topeka, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pattison and son, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Mr and Mrs. Werner Mantz, Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. E. A. Wise, Mrs. B. A. Miller, Mrs. H. S. Zane, C. Mignot, and Mrs. F. J. Eccleston, all of Emporia.

William served in Co. D. 56th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted at age 18 on 1 Oct 1864 and mustered out 9 Oct 1865 at New Orleans. The U. S. Civil War Soldiers file from Ancestry lists him as William Hahan and the U. S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, also a file from Ancestry, records him as William Hahn.

He was married to Mary E. Grubb, daughter of Douglas & Susan, on April 18, 1878 in Coffey County, Kansas. The Coffey County, Kansas marriage index spells his surname Haehn.

William & Mary Haehn are listed together in the 1880 Coffey County, Kansas census with Minnie, age 1. They are recorded again as Haehn in the 1895 state census with Minnie E., 15; Ivy, 14; Belle, 12; & Freddie H., 3.

William & Mary, are recorded with Fred, age 8 in the 1900 Burlington, Coffey, Kansas census, with the suname spelled Hahen. The 1910 census records them as Hahn.

The 1900 Burlington, Coffey, Kansas census lists the immigration year of William "Hahen" as 1849 and he is recorded as a section hand for the rail road. The 1920 census shows his immigration year as 1850.
