PROF. ARROWSMITH DEAD
NOTED EDUCATOR DIED AT RED BANK AFTER SEVEN WEEK ILLNESS
Prof. Stephen V. Arrowsmith, superintendent of the Red Bank schools since 1897, died Monday afternoon at his home Maple Avenue, Red Bank, after a seven weeks' illness with stomach trouble, aged 67 years. He was born in Middletown Township at the old Arrowsmith saw and grist mill, run by his father, Major Thomas Arrowsmith, who was in 1841 State Treasurer. He attended the county schools and later Glenwood Institute in Matawan. In 1875 he began his education career in the district school at Oak Grove, and in 1870 became principal of the Keyport graded school. He acted in that capacity until 1897 when he resigned to accept the superintendency of the Red Bank schools, which position he held up to his death. Professor Arrowsmith was a charter member of the School Masters' Club of New York City, a charger member and former president of the Council of Education of the State of New Jersey, and has been a member of the Monmouth County Board of Examiners for the past 20 years. He was also a member of Mystic Brotherhood Lodge No. 21, Pros and Accepted Masons and Coronal Council, Royal Arcanum of Keyport. Besides a widow, who was Miss Sarah Sproul of Keyport, Mr. Arrowsmith leaves two daughters, Miss Eleanor J. Arrowsmith of Red Bank, who teaches in the Red Bank schools; and Emma, wife of Prof. George Morris, superintendent of the Bloomfield schools. A brother, Col. George Arrowsmith was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Red Bank G.A.R. post was named after him. Dr. J. E. Arrowsmith, Thomas Arrowsmith and John V. Arrowsmith, all of Keyport, were also his brothers.
