Erskine Barton Childers was the son of the 4th Uachtarán na hÉireann Erskine H. Childers and his first wife Ruth (née Dow) Childers. His grandparents were the Irish Republicans and Nationalists Robert Erskine Childers & Mary Alden Childers. His grand uncle was Robert Childers Barton the Irish Nationalist and his grand aunt was the singer, actress & poet Gretchen Osgood Warren.

He was educated at Newtown in Co. Waterford and then at Trinity College Dublin, studying modern languages and history. Later, attending Stanford University in California, USA, he specialized in international relations and served as vice-president of the National Students' Association.

Early in his career he was a writer and broadcaster for the BBC. He went on from there to a noteworthy career as a senior international civil servant. From 1967 to 1989 he worked across many regions for several United Nations organizations. In 1974 he became world director of communications for the UN development agencies, based in New York. A specialist in economic development, he later served as senior adviser to the UN director for development and international economic cooperation till 1989.

His 1st marriage was to Sonia Baker of Australia with whom he adopted 2 daughters. In 1970 he married Mallica Valrathon of Thailand. They had a son, Erskine Ceaser Childers, born 1971. In 1996, he and his partner Marjolijn Snippe had a son Patrick Seán David Barton Childers.

Two months after the birth of his younger son, he died in Luxembourg shortly after speaking at the fiftieth anniversary congress of the World Federation of United Nations Federations, an organisation of which he was Secretary General.

✞ Erskine Barton Childers is buried at the graveyard on the church grounds at Derralossy, Co. Wicklow. His grave is next to that of his mother & father.
