William Henry Bunn enlisted in the Civil War November 1, 1861 at Camp Morton, N.C. about six months following the beginning of the war. He was commissioned an officer in Company H North Carolina 12 th infantry Regiment November 10, 1861 and promoted to full Captain May 1st 1862. Captain Bunn was killed at Burgess Mill the first day of the Battle of Boyton Plank Road, Petersburg, Virginia.
