On June 1,1894, at the age of 21, he married Edna Adeline Snider and together they had 15 children, five daughters and ten sons. They were married for 53 years.
Adeline died in 1947 and is buried at Philos Cemetery, Westernport, Allegheny County, Maryland next to their son, James Earl Hershberger.
On January 17, 1952, at the age of 79, James married his second wife, Sara E. Thompson. They were both residents of Nella's Rest Home in Parsons, WV.
James died on May 17, 1953 and was buried at Belington Fraternal Cemetery in Belington, WV at the insistence of his second wife, Sarah E. Simons Hershberger, to whom he had been married 16 months. She died four years later and is buried next to him.
