...Josie Jones Coats passed away September 5, 1972 at Lone Tree Lodge in Meade, Kansas at the age of 90 years 5 months and 16 days. She was born March 19, 1882 at Bronson, Kansas.
...Josie and her sister, Clara moved with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Jones from Bronson to Ingalls, Kansas in 1886. In the spring of 1893 the family moved to Walton, Kansas near Newton to break sod. There they lived in covered wagons. From there they moved into a sod house on a rented farm near Turon, Kansas. Josie lived there with her parents until her marriage to Porter Coats on September 30, 1901 at Hutchinson, Kansas.
...Josie and her husband moved form Preston, Kansas to Liberal in 1901, then to Turon, and to Raymond, Kansas in 1907. They lived in Raymond until they moved to Plains in 1930. They settled on a farm east of Plains until 1935 when they moved to a farm northwest of Plains. In 1939 she moved into town where she lived until her health failed. In July 1969 she moved to Lone Tree Lodge.
...She was preceded in death by her husband, Porter, in March 1939; by her son, Eugene in May, 1962; by her son Lawrence in May 1967, and by her grandson, Eugene Therrol Elliott, Commander USN in November 1970.
...She was a faithful and loyal member of the United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Women's Society, The Winona Chapter Order of Eastern Star, North Plains Study Club, Kimball Club, Plains Garden Club, Alpha Social and Study Club, The American Legion Auxiliary and the WCTU.
...Those left to mourn her passing are her children: Mrs. Faye Manuel, Venice, California; Mrs. Irene Lang, Topeka; Mrs. Neva Staples, Plains; Kyle M. Coats, Plains; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Clara Haynes, Lone Tree Lodge; two half brothers, Nealy Jones and Tracy Jones of Jetmore; one niece, Mrs. Evalena Unruh of Colorado Springs.
...The funeral service was held September 8 at 10:00 a.m. in the Plains Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Jerald Hooley. Music was by the organist, Mrs. Gloria Fruechting and soloist, Mrs. Mary Ann Hooley who sang "Sunrise Tomorrow" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow".
...Pallbearers were Lawrence E. Coats, Arwin E. Elliott, Charles Jimmy Staples, John P. Staples, Ricky L. Coats and Terry M. Coats. Burial was in the Plains Cemetery with Eastern Star graveside services.
