John Earl Aikman, age 92, of Middletown, DE, died peacefully at home on August 22, 2013.

Jack was born on October 10, 1920 in Upper Chichester, Pennsylvania to John Aikman and Emma Tyson Aikman.

Jack is survived by his wife, Phyllis Rose (Miller) Aikman, his son, William Aikman of Auburndale, Massachusetts, his daughter, Phyllis Johnson and her husband Leo of Middletown, Delaware, his granddaughter, Hillary Kriner and her husband Matthew of Townsend, Delaware, and three great-grandchildren: Thomas Schneider, Joseph Schneider, and McKenna Kriner, all of Townsend, Delaware.

He was predeceased by his daughter Bonnie formerly of New Castle, Delaware, his sister Helen Brooks formerly of Glenolden, Pennsylvania, and his sister Velma McBride formerly of Wallingford, Pennsylvania.

Prior to relocating to Middletown three years ago to live with his daughter, Jack and his wife lived for more than 30 years in Wilmington, DE and prior to that they lived for more than 25 years in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. Both Jack and his wife grew up in Glenolden, Pennsylvania and attended the same public schools, each graduating from Glen-Nor High School.

A veteran of the United States Navy, Jack served during World War II principally as an Aviation Electronics Technician First Class assigned to anti-submarine air patrols of the Atlantic coast. He studied electronics at several colleges under US Navy programs during the war and at Drexel University, Philadelphia after the war ended. Following discharge from the Navy, Jack went to work for RCA as an electronics engineer and then spent his entire career working for that company in a variety of positions culminating in a Senior Instructor role at the RCA National Training Center in Cherry Hill, NJ. Prior to enlisting in the Navy, Jack worked at Baldwin Lima Hamilton Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pennsylvania.

Jack was a life-long gardener who maintained a two-acre vegetable garden when he was young man. He was a connoisseur of automobiles who possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of automotive history. He was an avid reader who in his later years would frequently read an entire book in a single day. For more than half a century, Jack was a member of the Prospect Park (Pennsylvania) Masonic Lodge #578.

Funeral services will be held noon on Monday, August 26 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown where friends may visit with Mr. Aikman's family one hour prior. Interment will follow at 2:30 pm in Lawn Croft Cemetery, 1000 West Ridge Road in Linwood, PA.
