Richard Horner Butner, 71, recently went home to be with his Lord and Savior. He was born Oct. 4, 1934, in Pitt County to the late Rufus Ernest and Etta Lee Horner Butner. Horner was a graduate of East Carolina University and served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a loving father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Doug Butner Sr. and Rufus Butner Jr.; sisters, Dorothea McLawhorn, Ruby Andrews, Mable Alexander, Mary Lou Butner and Ernestine Bonica. Survivors include his daughters, Connie Butner Stewart and husband Rob of Clayton and Monica Butner King and husband Jay of La Grange; son Richard Keith Butner and wife Kym of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Lauren Butner, Jonathan Butner, Courtney Stewart, Josh Andrews, Kayla Ginn, Trent King; step-grandchildren, Jamie King and Casey King; sisters, Helen Bame of Pikeville and Maxie Hill of Kinston; brother George Butner of Kinston; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; special friend Gail Edmondson of Goldsboro; and former wife Sue Albritton Bartholomew of Kinston. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in the chapel of Howard-Carter Funeral Home with Minister Sam Jones officiating. Visitation will follow the service. A private burial will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Piney-Grove Baptist Church, Rick Goforth Scholarship Fund, 3217 Piney-Grove Wilbon Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526 or to Westminster United Methodist Church, Discretionary Fund, 1001 Westminster Lane, Kinston, NC 28501.
