Left for Chicago then St. Louis. Worked as an architectual iron worker was injured on the job at Locust & Broadway in St Louis. The accident left his right hand and foot crippled. He requested a pension and was approved.
His first wife having died in 1888 he remarried a woman named Cora. It was the second marriage for both.
In one deposition he referred to himself as 'old crippled Buckeye'. At least his sense of humor was intact.
