Bertha McLellan

GRAY -- On Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, our family and community lost a sweet and loving soul, Bertha McLellan. Bertha was a happy-go- lucky fun-loving person who loved her family above all. Bertha loved social events, shopping, cooking, sewing, crocheting, crafts and she always wanted to live in a lighthouse. Recently her favorite hobbies were reading and NASCAR.

Since 1997 Bertha has lived at the Apple Tree Village senior apartment complex in Gray, and she dearly loved her Apple Tree family. She regularly attended local senior events and loved going on senior trips. Bertha also made annual trips to California from 1989-2005 to visit her son, Larry.

Bertha Elizabeth Whitney was born in South Portland, on April 17, 1921, the daughter of Laura E, and Alphonso Whitney and lived in Skowhegan, Madison and South Portland before her family settled in North Yarmouth. She graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1939 and married Ambrose M. Mac McLellan on July 20, 1942. They lived in Pownal and then in Raymond where she attended church and sang in the choir.

When their oldest children were growing up, Bertha was a leader of Girl Scouts and 4-H. She was a dedicated homemaker and also worked at the Sebago Moccasin shoe factory, Sylvania and McCrory's Department Store. After the death of her husband in 1987, Bertha moved to Brunswick where she spent 10 years before moving to Gray.

Bertha is survived by five children, Elaine Norton of Gray, Wayne M. McLellan of Campbell, Mo., Dennis McLellan of Kenduskeag, Jeanette L. Hamlin of Old Orchard Beach and Larry McLellan of Lompoc, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, Dean, Daryl, Deanna, Teresa, Wayne Jr., Jaime, Anthony, Scott, Juliane, Glenn, Christy, Juliemae, Kimberly, Micah, Michael, Patrick; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Johnson and Nellie Campbell, five brothers, Herbert, Elmer, Alton, Stanley and Warren Whitney; and countless friends.

Bertha was predeceased by her husband of nearly 45 years, Ambrose M. Mac McLellan; and one sister, Thelma Croteau.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Saturday, at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Rd., Gray, where a funeral will immediately follow. Pastor Darwin Vail will officiate. Arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home.
