Leon S. Allen, 84, of Bunker Hill, died at 3:45 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Century Villa Healthcare in Greentown. He was born the son of Loren H. and Velma M. (Thomas) Allen on March 8, 1929 in Wheeler, MI. On June 19, 1960 he married Phoebe Jane (Poff) and she survives him.

Leon graduated from St. Louis, MI High School in 1948. He started working as an apprentice at Crandall Funeral Home January 1, 1947 while still in High School. He went on to graduate from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis in 1950, and was licensed as a funeral director and embalmer on October 3, 1950. He served his apprenticeship at Jordan Funeral Home in Indianapolis starting in 1948, and continued working there until 1953.

On June 9, 1951 he was inducted into the US Army during the Korean War. He graduated from the U.S. Army Quartermaster School of Graves Registration at Fort Lee, VA on April 26, 1952, and served as NCOIC of the 293rd Quartermaster 8th U.S. Army Mortuary near Seoul, Korea from 1952-1953.

Leon purchased the former Glazier Funeral Home in Bunker Hill in January of 1955, and opened the business on April 7, 1955. He operated the Allen Funeral Home for 39 years with the assistance of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Loren Allen, and later his step-mother, Iva Allen, his wife, Phoebe Jane (Poff) Allen, his daughter, Linda Talbert, and granddaughter, Amanda Watson. On December 31, 1993 he merged with Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home in Peru.

He was Past-President of the Bunker Hill Businessmen's Association, held various offices in the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, Pipe Creek Township Fire Department, was past District Director of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association and served many years on the Awards Committee of the IFDA.

His current memberships include Bunker Hill Methodist Church, Bunker Hill Lodge 683 F & AM (was a member since 1950), Scottish Rite Valley of Ft. Wayne, Bunker Hill and Walton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, James Reece Post 1122 VFW (charter member), life member of Peru VFW post, Miami County Historical Society, Indiana Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, Northwest Indiana Carriage & Sleigh Association, Professional Car Society of the U. S. (Indiana Chapter), Board of Directors of the Springdale Cemetery Association (Secretary Treasurer 1956-2000), and the Indiana State Troopers Association.

Leon's business interests also included being a wholesale distributor for Ft. Wayne Wilbert Burial Vault Co. for 7 years, owner & operator of the Bunker Hill Laundromat for 13 years, and he had assisted Jeff Stout at Stout & Son Funeral Home in Russiaville since 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, daughter, Linda Talbert, Kokomo, and grand-daughter, Amanda (Paul Freeman) Watson, Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister in-law Karold and Pauline Allen.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Jeff Stout of Stout & Son Funeral Home. Services will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at 11 AM at the Allen Funeral Home 136 S. Elm St. Bunker Hill with Pastor Evan Strong officiating. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery in Bunker Hill with Military Rites. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Allen Funeral Home in Bunker Hill.
