EX-ASSEMBLYMAN DIES SUDDENLY
MARTIN RAPPEL STRICKEN AT STURGEON BAY
Suffers Heart Attack While on Fishing Trip From This City; Funeral on Wednesday

Suffering a sudden stroke of apoplexy on Saturday night while on a fishing trip at the cottage of a friend at Sturgeon Bay, Martin Rappel, (photo) former assemblyman from the Second District of Manitowoc county, who also served the town of Rockland as town chairman and assessor and was a bank official at Collins and a trustee of the county asylum for three years, passed away on Sunday morning. The remains were brought here this morning. The deceased, since 1923 has been living a retired life at 1324 South Eleventh street, in this city.

Funeral services for Mr. Rappel, who was 63 years of age and a lifelong resident of the county, will be held from the St. Boniface church here on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock with burial at Calvary cemetery. Long prominent in public life in the county and for years one of the leaders in the democratic party of the county and state, the sudden death of Mr. Rappel was a shock to his hosts of friends. Since attaining manhood Mr. Rappel followed farming and stock raising.

Late last week Mr. Rappel decided to make a week-end fishing trip to Sturgeon Bay to visit his friend, Edward Braun there. He left here and motored to the Bay and went to the Braun cottage. He was the victim of a stroke on Saturday night at 10 o'clock and physicians were summoned but he grew rapidly worse and passed away Sunday morning.

Born In Rockland
The deceased was born in the town of Rockland in 1867 and grew to manhood there, receiving a common school education. He early took up farming and stock raising. He was married in 1889 to Miss Mary Seidl of Kellnersville, who survives him with five sons and three daughters. Mr. Rappel early evinced an interest in town affairs and was Rockland town assessor for four years. He was named town chairman later and represented Rockland on the county board of supervisors for eight years. During that time he also served as a trustee for three years. Mr. Rappel was a stockholder and director in the Collins State Bank of Collins and served as vice president of the institution for a number of years.

Elected to Assembly
It was in 1916 that the democrats of the Second assembly district of Manitowoc county comprising Two Rivers and the towns in the northern section of the county prevailed upon Mr. Rappel to make the race for the assembly. He was elected and for two years represented the district in the lower house of the legislature in Madison. Mr. Rappel was a member of the Eagles lodge.

Seven years ago the deceased gave up active life, and removed to this city to reside. Besides the widow, five sons, Gilbert of Reedsville, William of St. Nazianz, Joseph and Fred of this city and Oscar of Sheboygan, three daughters, Mrs. Frank Manlick and Mrs. Guy Kehlenhoefer, both of this city and Mrs. Charles Hlavachek of Sheboygan Falls, two sister, Mrs. Barbara Wilhelm and Mrs. Martin Einberger, both of this city and two brothers, Joseph of Medford, Wis., now en-route to California, and Wenzel of Wyoming, survive. There are twenty-five grandchildren.
