The 1900 US Census lists him living in Minneapolis with his wife Leila and their sons Stanley H., age 4, and John G., age 1. Herbert immigrated to the United States in 1887. Feb 1901 he and Leila had a third son, George and then in July 1902, Leila died. Herbert remarried Ella Bruck on 12 April 1905; she raised the boys as her own. He died while traveling on the MKT train in Kansas City, MO.

Herbert J. Clements, 73, a veteran of more than 40 years in the Minnesota grain marketing business, died Tuesday. Born in Beccles, England, he came to America when 18 and a year later located in Minneapolis, where he went to work for Frank A. Pierce Co. grain commission house. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Minneapolis Golf club, and other organizations. Funeral arrangements will be completed Wednesday.
