Daniel S. Berry, prominent attorney and civic leader, born to Timothy and Margaret [Kelly] Berry in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, on May 14, 1858. Daniel began farming at a young age for his father and area farmers south of Morrison, Whiteside County, Illinois.
Daniel educated himself and graduated from Morrison High School in 1877. He then began studying law in the office of Henry & Johnson in Sterling. In 1879, he resumed his legal studies in the law office of W.J. McCoy at Morrison, and subsequently taught four months at Prairie Centre District. After that, he studied law with Mr. McCoy until September 1880. He then entered the law office of O.F. Woodruff of Morrison and studied diligently until the Fall of 1882, when he was admitted to the bar of the Appellate Court at Chicago, Judge Bailey, now of the Supreme Court, presiding.

Daniel married Ms. Mattie L. Tucker on October 11, 1882, and established himself in the Morrison area. In 1883, Daniel opened a law office in Savanna, Carroll County, Illinois, and his career there as a lawyer was marked with great success. For seven years he was president of the board of education in Savanna and for many years he served as city attorney. He was a member of the Illinois General Assembly from 1890 to 1896. He was one of the most influential members of the house during these years.

On May 13, 1905, while unlocking his office door at the Opera House in downtown Savanna, an unknown assailant shot and killed Daniel S. Berry. The case remains unsolved with many rumors and speculations as to the responsible party.
