APPLETON YOUTH KILLED IN CRASH
Roger P. Rindt Dies in Neenah After Collision on Highway 41

Neenah —
Roger P. Rindt, 19, only child of Mr. And Mrs. Roger F. Rindt of 1515 S. Memorial Drive, Appleton, was fatally injured about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday when his car was hit by a semi-truck and trailer at the Highway 41 intersection with Main Street, just inside the Neenah city limits. He had driven in front of the truck.

Rindt was pronounced dead on arrival at Theda Clark hospital where he was taken in the Neenah ambulance. Dr. G.A. Steel, Winnebago county coroner, said the youth received multiple skull fractures, a hole in the forehead, a fracture of the upper left arm and a severe cut on the upper right arm.

His death was the second for Neenah this year and the 10th for Winnebago county. Dr. Steele said no inquest is planned.

Went Through Arterial
The truck driver, Harold J. Berken, 39, River Vista acres, West DePere, was pinned in his overturned cab for 30 minutes while police and others worked to free him. He received only minor injuries. He was taken to Theda Clark hospital where his condition was good this morning.

A second Wisconsin traffic victim yesterday was Oscar

E. Johnson, 67, Milwaukee, who was killed Wednesday afternoon when his car left Highway E about four miles west of Medford in Taylor county. The state death toll is 277 today, compared with 300 on the same day a year ago.

Three witnesses said the youth was headed west on Main street and failed to stop for an arterial at the Highway 41 intersection. The truck was headed south on Highway 41. The driver, who was hauling a load of lime to the southern part of the state, had no time to stop or avoid an accident, witnesses said.

One witness said he stopped for the arterial and that Rindt passed him on the left without stopping. The truck stuck the right front of the 1954 model sedan, shoving the front into the driver’s portion of the car.

The truck was going about 35 miles an hour according to the driver of the car behind the truck.

Going Fast
Another witness said the Rindt car came out of the intersection “at a fast rate of speed.” There were no tire skid marks for either vehicle, police said.

The truck jackknifed after the accident. The cab overturned, resting on its top, while the trailer tipped over on its side. The truck cab ended 54 feet from the south end of the intersection and the trailer, 18 feet from the cab.

The car ended upright about 156 feet from the south end of the intersection.

Free Truck Driver
The truck driver’s head was pinned tightly between the seat and a radio box. Workmen had difficulty freeing him. When they pried on the radio box, the box mashed his face. Durward Breaker of the Neenah police, who was off duty, grabbed the radio and pulled it loose, Battery acid dripped on workmen, one of the workmen said.

Berken never lost consciousness.

While the rescue operations were underway, firemen from the Neenah west side station stood by with extinguishers because of leaking gasoline from the truck cab. Two cars of Neenah police, two county police cars and four wreckers were sent to the scene.

The trailer had to be unloaded before it could be righted.

The truck cab was extensively damaged and its front wheels torn off.

Funeral Saturday
Rindt was born May 26, 1940 in Manitowoc. He lived in Appleton for the last 16 years and was a member of the 1958 class of Appleton High school.

Funeral services will be at 8 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Manitowoc. Friends may call at the Brettschneider Funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. Charles Rindt, Manitowoc.
