James McCourtney Young was the son of Squire B. and Susana (Purcell) Young. He married Lydia C. Mack on September 8, 1859 in Brooks, Adams County, Iowa. She was the daughter of James and Catherine (Grawl) Mack.
To this union nine children were born Rosa May, Sebada Asbury, Mary Elizabeth, Franklin Alvin, William Edward, Lyman Talmage, Clarence, Katie Mabel and Richard Carl.

After Lydia's death James married Martha Riffenbarg.
No cemetery stone was found.
