Civil War veteran. Enlisted as a Private on October 1, 1861 in Jefferson Co., Pennsylvania, joining Co. C, 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters Regiment (Berdan's Sharpshooters).

He fought in most of the major battles involving the Union's Army of the Potomac, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
