Randall was the son of Lee Carlton and June Carlton of Harrington Park NJ and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 17 1968 in Newark NY. He arrived in Vietnam on December 6 1968 were he was assigned for duty with Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

At the beginning of February the Battalion was deployed at the Vandergrift Combat Base preparing for a major operation northwest of the A Shau Valley.

On February 21 and 22 during Operation DEWEY CANYON Company A moved through Company C lines searching north of Lang Ha near the border of Vietnam and Laos, in the Trieu Phong District of Quang Tri Province along Route 9222 in the Da Krang River Valley. An NVA bunker complex was located and the Marines went on the attack meeting stiff enemy resistance, the NVA stood their ground and fought against the advancing Marines. When the hostilities subsided, casualties were gathered and evacuated. One of the Marines killed in the action was PFC Carlton who suffered hostile rifle wounds to his body.
