He graduated from Liberty High School in 1942, and was drafted into the Army in 1943, joining the 88th Infantry Division at Camp Gruber after training at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas. Assigned to Division Headquarters MP Platoon, he transferred to Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop in 1944. He was wounded in 1944 just south of Po Valley and spent eight months in hospitals overseas and in the states. Bob received an Honorable Medical Discharge from the Army in 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart with one Battle Star for his ETO ribbon (European Theater of Operation).
Bob and Helen met while he was recovering at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. As fate would have it, Helen had just graduated from nursing school, and was assigned to Bob's hospital ward. It was love at first sight and they were married in El Paso, Texas the day after he was discharged. They moved to Bowling Green a couple of months later. Bob graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1949. He retired in 1986 as Controller and Vice President of Ed Schmidt Pontiac, GMC, Inc., Perrysburg.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, where he was the first president of the Holy Name Society, and taught catechism to ninth and tenth grade boys. He served on The Bowling Green City Council; was president of the University PTA; chairman of the Education Committee of the Chamber of Commerce; board member of the Wood County Red Cross; board member of Skyline View Trailer Park, Catawba Island; board member of Wayne Public Library; Scout Master for a boy scout troop; and secretary for the Junior Fair Board.
Robert's greatest joy in life was his family. In his memoirs he wrote: "Have faith, maintain a sense of humor, don't take life too seriously, enjoy life, and most importantly, enjoy family."
