Deceased Name: DOROTHY KIDDER, PHILANTHROPIST ACTIVE IN WASHINGTON, NYC; AT
78
Dorothy (Robinson) Kidder, a philanthropist by family tradition, died of
cancer yesterday in her home in Washington, D.C. She was 78. Born in
Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mrs. Kidder was the great-granddaughter of Eben D.
Jordan, the founder of the Jordan Marsh department store company and a
co-owner of The Boston Globe. She was raised in New York City and Paris,
attending the Chapin School in New York and Foxcroft School in Middleburg,
Va.

In 1938, she married Randolph Appleton Kidder, a member of the foreign
service, and accompanied him to his assignments in Canada, Australia,
Brazil, Vietnam, France and Cambodia, where he served as US ambassador until
his retirement.

Mrs. Kidder was a major contributor to the dance programs at the Kennedy
Center, to the National Gallery and to the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, D.C., and to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She also
contributed to a number of other charitable causes through the Hopeful Fund,
which she founded, being particularly active in funding programs and
services for the homeless in the District of Columbia in recent years.

She enjoyed gardening, particularly at her weekend home on the eastern shore
of Maryland and her summer home near Paris.

She leaves her husband, a son, Michael R., and five grandchildren. Funeral
arrangements are incomplete.
