Lester Feltman Killed in West
Avalanche Buries Submarine Sailor

MANITOWOC — Lester J. Feltman, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alois Feltman, of 1117A S. 23rd St., a sailor attached to the submarine USS Ramona, was killed Saturday at San Diego, Calif., when the overhang of a 100 foot cliff gave way and tons of rock and sandstone toppled upon him. Feltman had been skin diving and was standing in a cave in the Ocean Beach section of San Diego with William Preston, 21, a shipmate from Tacoma, Wash., who also was skin diving. Preston said the avalanche missed him but completely covered Feltman. He said he dug Feltman out but he was dead. Funeral plans are incomplete but services will be in Manitowoc and announced later in the week by the Pfeffer Funeral Home.

Feltman was born in Manitowoc June 15, 1933, and attended the St. Mary parochial school and was graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. He was employed for a time at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. For a year and a half he was a member of Battery D. Wisconsin National Guard, Two Rivers. Three years ago he enlisted in the navy. He was a member of the Young Men’s Club of St. Mary congregation.

Surviving are the parents, sister, Sharon, at home; grandfather, Peter Gapinski, of Manitowoc.
