US Senator, US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Minnesota's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 until 1995. He served as a United States Senator from the State of Minnesota from 1995 until 2001. Born in the town of Princeton, Minnesota (about 50 miles north of Minneapolis), he was raised on a dairy farm. After attending Carroll College in Montana, he initiated his career in television broadcasting as a news anchor and producer. He worked for stations in Montana, Wisconsin and later Illinois, in addition to heading a construction company which specialized in residential development. After finding an interest in the political arena, Grams was elected to the US Congress in 1992. During his tenures in both the US House of Representatives and US Senate the highly-conservative Grams fought for reducing government spending. He achieved recognition from his efforts on legislation for a $500 dollar per child tax credit. He died following a battle with cancer.
