He died when the plane he was on crashed during a storm in the Everglades. Although I don't personally like the title of the book, there is a book that tells some of what happened building up to,during the events, and the aftermath of the flight and crash. The book is Anvil of the gods: Modern Airplanes Verses Violent Storms 1964 by Fred McClement.
